Welcome to BookSoc!

The University of Sheffield Book Society is a wonderful place to meet like minded individuals, engage socially and read some fantastic books along the way.

As a society, we read one book every 2 weeks throughout the Autumn and Spring semesters, with longer books chosen to cover the Christmas and Easter vacations.

We meet at 19:00 every Tuesday. At these meetings we discuss the book that we are currently reading in a fun and engaging manner that is open to everybody. This is where we hold a vote for what the next book we will read, which is chosen from the long list of suggestions that our members provide! Currently due to the social distancing requirements these meetings are held on Google Meet

We read a vast array of books, and are open to any suggestions. Novels, short story collections, poetry and plays, foreign works, all kinds of books are welcome to be suggested and voted on, and no matter what we pick there is always spirited and friendly discussion regarding it. Don’t worry about the reading load either, as a we are very accommodating of how busy everybody’s schedules are in our considerations of which books to choose, and even if you haven’t read the book we will always be happy to see you in our meetings.

In the final week leading up to the start of semester we are finishing up our “BookSoc Summer Read-a-Thon” with “A Whole Life” by Robert Seethaler. This will be the final book of our summer selection and we really hope to see you at the meeting if you’re interested.

On the alternate weeks typically before the pandemic we went out to pub quizzes, board game nights, bowling, ghost tours of the city, bar crawls and occasional club nights. In the past we have also gone on day trips to literature festivals and to visit historic cities such as York. However, sadly due to the current situation these plans are on hold. Instead we will be exploring a whole new world of socially distanced and online activities, which we believe can be equally fun.

Committee

All of our clubs and societies are run by a committee.

A committee is a team of people that lead, organise and publicise a group within your Students' Union.

It can be really rewarding as well as being a great way to gain experience and invaluable skills for your future career.
