Capoeira Society

Capoeira is a unique 400 year old Brazilian art-form deeply rooted in ritual and custom. It combines dance, martial arts, music, and gymnastics into a distinctive sport and game that is suitable for everyone. The combinations of skills used in Capoeira develop endurance, flexibility and alertness in its practioners as well as physical strength, mental balance and creativity. Our group, Cordao de Ouro ("The Belt of Gold") was founded in Brazil in 1967 by Mestre Suassuna and Mestre Brasilia, teachers of Capoeira. Since then CDO has grown to be one of the most recognised groups in Capoeira, with schools all over the world. During the previous academic year, our group in Sheffield has performed several demonstrations at Union events, and travelled to other UK cities, such as Manchester, Nottingham and Birmingham to take part in Capoeira events. We usually have a grading ceremony or 'Batizado' every March which is an exciting event for all levels! New members are always welcome.

We usually have classes four times a week, but currently our usual schedule has been interrupted due to covid. Instead we are offering online and occasional outdoor sessions. Subscribe to our mailing list or follow us on social media to stay up to date on when sessions are happening and for information on how to join in. Hope to see you soon!

All of our clubs and societies are run by a committee.

A committee is a team of people that lead, organise and publicise a group within your Students' Union.

It can be really rewarding as well as being a great way to gain experience and invaluable skills for your future career.
