Symphony Orchestra Society
About the Orchestra
Sheffield University Symphony Orchestra (SUSO) brings together the best orchestral players from around the university to play a range of demanding repertoire in two concerts each year. Focusing on large orchestral works, recent concerts have included works such as Dvorak's 8th Symphony and Berlioz Carmen Fantasy. There is also the opportunity for members of the orchestra to audition to conduct, compose a piece for the orchestra, or play a solo piece with orchestral accompaniment.
We are a very friendly auditioned orchestra who normally hold rehearsals on Monday evenings from 7:00-9:30 in Firth Hall during term time. Socials are held regularly each semester, as well as post-rehearsal pub every week. It's a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and join a fun and relaxed social group of like-minded people, as well as learning exciting repertoire and developing musical skills.
How to get involved
To find out more about how you can get involved this semester, follow our social media, find us at the online activities fair on September 25th and 30th October, or just drop us a message. The orchestra cannot run as normal this semester (Autumn 2020), but we are able to provide some opportunities to play music and meet new people.
All of our clubs and societies are run by a committee.
A committee is a team of people that lead, organise and publicise a group within your Students' Union.
It can be really rewarding as well as being a great way to gain experience and invaluable skills for your future career.
