Hello and welcome, you little brave heart!

Well done for your courage to leave your comfy home to explore the world and the fantastic opportunities here in Sheffield. Here we have the BEST rated Students’ Union in the country (for the 5th year running) and a global community of more than 27,000 students of around 150 nationalities.

My name is Ana Gabriela Popa and I am your International Students’ Officer for the 2016/17 term. I am part of a team of 8 people that are making sure your voice is heard. I particularly focus on the representation and empowerment of International students whilst working towards a stronger inclusive community.

My initial advice to you all is get out of your rooms, EXPLORE! Check the Activities Fair, the Sports Fair, the hundreds of societies, the Representative and Working Committees, find what interest you and make friends. I and my team are always around on Level 4 of the Students’ Union if you need any advice or just a friendly face to talk to, especially if you ever feel homesick. Just don’t give up trying new things.

We are here for you whenever you need us!

Best wishes,

Ana-Gabriela Popa

Global Events Calendar

The International Students’ Committee (ISC) organise special events every year to bring our diverse student population together and celebrate our different cultures.

Annual highlights include:

  • World Week is a week-long festival to showcase our global community and develop our global perspectives. There is a variety of events held throughout the week including the 'Coats for Cachi' fashion show and 'World Week Parade'.
  • International Languages Festival offers taster sessions of over 100 languages.
  • The World Food Festival is an evening of delicious food from all over the world. Our national societies enter their recipes for the chance to be named 'Best Dish'.
  • The International Cultural Evening has been taking place for over 40 years and gets bigger and better every year. The event features vibrant performances from national societies and is one of the most anticipated highlights of the SU calendar.

The University has it’s own Chaplaincy, which offers care and support to people of all faiths and none. They are the best place to start if you are looking for guidance on local groups practicing your faith.

Inside the Students’ Union you will find Prayer Rooms (on Level 2), and regular Interfaith Cafés where you have the opportunity to meet people with and without faith, and talk about how religion contributes to student life. There are also a number faith groups at the Students' Union who seek to help students practice their religion and raise awareness of their own faith.

There is lots of varied entertainment on offer at Sheffield Students’ Union. We of course have some fun night clubs but we have lots of other options too. We have a 350 seater cinema which shows recent blockbusters at for just £3. We also have regular theatre, comedy, live music, and talks; see our What’s On pages for more information. Our Give it a Go programme offers you the chance to try out new hobbies and visit some of the UK’s best attractions. The sessions and trips are well organised and are a great opportunity to make friends, and visit places you may never have seen before - all at a low prices. You can buy tickets for their new programme now!

Around Sheffield there are several stores specialising in international food. You can view some of these on our Sheffield SU International Students’ Google Map. The Students’ Union also has many different outlets serving food from across the globe. Check out ‘Our Shop’ for a range of noodle bowls, soups, snacks and drinks, and Pearl’s ‘Bubble Tea’ outlet. Most of our outlets also serve halal options- just ask if you’re not sure!
