Hi, I am Rex, I am from France, and I am your International Students’ Officer. This might not make any sense to you for now but it mostly means that my job is to take care of you, the international student reading this. My office is on the level 4 of the Students’ Union if you ever need anything, you can also email me at international.officer@sheffield.ac.uk and I hold drop-in sessions every Wednesday during term from 4pm to 6pm if you just want to chat, or have any ideas that could help improve the life of international students.

First, congratulations!
You studied really hard to get in our wonderful University of Sheffield. What you did is truly brave, you left home, you left your country not knowing exactly what was waiting for you here in Sheffield. Let me tell you what is here waiting for you: the most amazing international community! Welcome to your home away from home. Our University and especially our Students’ Union are built on the diversity of cultures of our students and we are proud to be international. We are proud that you chose Sheffield, delighted to have you as one of our own. I know you are going to have an amazing time here amongst us, you are a part of our Sheffield community! Welcome!

My advice...
What is outstanding about the University of Sheffield and its Students’ Union is our internationalism. It does not matter if you are British or International: my greatest advice for you is meet someone from another country! Make a friend who was born elsewhere, you will grow in many ways. Your vision of the world will expand and you will get the chance to rediscover it.

I wish you the best and I am so excited to be working for you!
À bientôt.

Rex Béchu
Students' Union International Students' Officer 2018/19

Watch our #weareinternational video and hear how our students lives have been enriched through meeting others from different cultural backgrounds.

Global Events Calendar

The International Students’ Committee (ISC) organise special events every year to bring our diverse student population together and celebrate our different cultures.

Annual highlights include:

  • World Week is a week-long festival to showcase our global community and develop our global perspectives. There is a variety of events held throughout the week including our 'World Week Parade' and International Languages Festival offering taster sessions of many languages.
  • The International Cultural Evening (ICE) has been taking place for over 40 years and gets bigger and better every year. It is a wonderful showcase of different cultures. If you want to travel around the world in one evening, ICE is the perfect event for you. The event features vibrant performances from national societies and is one of the most anticipated highlights of the SU calendar.
  • The World Food Festival is a weekend of delicious food from all over the world. Our national societies enter their recipes for the chance to be named 'Best Dish'.
  • There are many other events which take place throughout the year which you can take part in. These include information fairs, social events, and voting for the students who you want to represent you.

Faith

The University has its own Multifaith Chaplaincy, which offers care and support to people of all faiths and none. They are the best place to start if you are looking for guidance on local groups practicing your faith.

Inside the Students’ Union you will find Prayer Rooms (on Level 2), and regular Interfaith Cafés where you have the opportunity to meet people with and without faith, and talk about how religion contributes to student life. There are also a number faith groups at the Students' Union who seek to help students practice their religion and raise awareness of their own faith.
