After 6 intense fights, Team Hallam came away with the point for boxing leaving the overall Varsity score a draw with each university having 1.5 points.
The opening bout was between Jonny Callan for Uni of Sheffield and Vincent Wong for Team Hallam, followed by Min Neo for Uos and Azharul Khan. Next up was David Agbam in black and gold and Farrel Materson in maroon. Team Hallam took an early lead, with wins secured by Vincent Wong, Azharul Khan and Farrell Masterson making it 3-0 at the halfway point. Uni of Sheffield came back strong winning the next two bouts, thanks to Henry Curnow in his match against Sam Smailes and then Rikki Webster who faced Ali Foroughi. The final bout put all the pressure on Uni of Sheffield’s very own Elliot Sharp while the score was 3-2 to Hallam. He definitely brought his best, with an almost too close to call finish, with the match winning best bout of the night.
Unfortunately a split decision by the judges gave the win to Mat Smith from Team Hallam, making the final score 4-2 to Team Hallam. It was a valiant effort from Uni of Sheffield and the atmosphere was superb with a great turnout from both sides. Thanks to everyone who came along to support the team, it was a great night of competition.
We are black and gold.
