About LGBT+ History Month

Welcome to our LGBT+ History Month 2019 webpage! Here you’ll find information about what LGBT+ History Month is, as well as all the events taking place for the month. Feel free to message us on Facebook or Twitter if you have any questions. This year’s national theme is “Peace, Reconciliation, and Activism”. This is extremely fitting, as June 2019 marks the 50 year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in the USA. This was a defining moment in LGBT+ history and the LGBT+ rights movement, and was the beginning of tireless activism of many in our community.

LGBT+ History Month takes place every February. We are planning a month full of activities, events and projects, all with the aim of teaching people about the history of our community, and celebrating the progress and achievements that have been made for and by LGBT+ people.

In the UK we celebrate it every February, dedicating a month full of activities, events and projects to the progress and achievements we have made as a community. We celebrate the national and international contributions of individuals who fought for our civil rights and the rights that we have today.

In Sheffield we believe that Sport is for all! We are committed to breaking down barriers to ensure that all the value and benefits of sport and physical activity can be shared by all our students.

Sports Committee, LGBT+ Committee and Sarah Morse our Sports Officer, have collaborated to produce a ‘Pride in Sport Campaign’ as part of the wider LGBT+ History Month to break down the barriers and stereotypes regarding LGBT+ participation in sport at our University. However, we still recognise how much work still needs to be done to make sure that sport and facilities on campus are more accessible and inclusive, so we aim to use the week to highlight current barriers and experiences of LGBT+ students’ participating in sport. If you are a student and identify as LGBT+, we’d really love to hear from you about your experiences, perceptions or general thoughts about sport, specifically joining sports teams at the University of Sheffield.

We wish everyone a fun and successful LGBT+ History Month 2019!

This session is particularly recommended for safety and inclusions officers, captains/presidents, Social Sport leaders and anybody else who is responsible for the wellbeing and inclusion of participants in sport. The majority of LGBT+ students participate in sport or some type of fitness activities and the world of sport is often supportive and inclusive. However, there are still a number of barriers that can prevent LGBT+ students from engaging in sport. In this session we will:

  • Discuss the barriers that LGBT+ students face
  • Hear about the experience of LGBT+ students in sport
  • Provide guidance about what Clubs can do to become more inclusive

By the end of the session students should have a clear idea of what they can do to help break down the barriers that prevent students from engaging in sports

Trans clothes swap

Friday 22nd February 2019, View Room 6

For many trans people shopping for clothes is incredibly difficult but can be crucial for gender affirmation. From gender dysphoria to harassment from others it can be a very stressful, upsetting and sometimes even dangerous experience. Financial barriers that face trans people often also prevent trans people from being able to afford the clothes they need. The trans clothes swap aims to provide clothes for trans people in a safe inclusive environment. This event is open to all those who identify as a gender that is in some way different to the one they were assigned at birth. This includes people who identify as: another gender, two or more genders, no gender or someone who is questioning their gender identity.

Although this is advertised as a 'clothes swap' please do not feel you cannot attend if you do not have clothes to give. This event is for all and wishes to support those in need no matter their circumstances.

Just to clarify this event is open to students and non-students alike and it will only be trans identifying individuals who will be helping out on the day, so there is no need to feel a fear of outing as this is a safe space. There will be a dressing room in the corner and an extra effort has been made to ensure clothing of all sizes are available, so those of all body types come along!
