What is Disability History Month?

Disability History Month is an annual event, that runs from the 22nd of November to the 22nd of December. It started in 2010, and has already made progress at increasing awareness of disability. The theme of disability history month this year is music. This is an opportunity to put a spotlight on the the incredible, creative disabled musicians throughout history (such as Evelyn Glennie, Stevie Wonder, Gurrunul Yunupingu, Ray Charles and Joni Mitchell).

For history month the Disabled Students’ Committee will be celebrating the achievements of disabled people and working to raise awareness of this important month.

Disabled Students Committee (DSC)

DSC is a student group, which represents the needs of disabled students, and acts both as a forum for concerns and a platform meeting others who share similar interests.

Breaking the Barriers

A Discussion on Disabled People in Sport

27th November, SU Auditorium
19:30-21:00 (Doors open at 19:00)

People often assume that disabled people can’t engage in sports that aren’t specifically tailored for them. In this discussion we will be breaking that myth, and the wider stigmas around disability. There will be a focus on the experience of disabled students in sport, how clubs can support disabled students, and ultimately how we can create a sports environment which is inviting to disabled students.

This event will begin with a screening of the TEDx Talk by Martyn Ashton, 'In Disaster There is Opportunity - Finding a Path Through Paralysis'.

Art Cafe

Every Tuesday, Activities Zone, 17:00-19:00
Free tea, coffee cake, art and good chat.
This is open to everyone.

Art Café is DSC's weekly social, open to everyone regardless of whether they identify as having a disability or not. We provide hot drinks, snacks, and craft supplies so you can relax with some colouring or just have a chat! You are welcome to bring your own art projects, or even uni work if you're feeling particularly studious!

If you have any questions, accessibility needs, or would like to meet up with someone to go to the event with then please feel free to get in touch with the committee (dsc@sheffield.ac.uk). We want to ensure that you have a comfortable and relaxing evening!

For history month, Art Cafe is going to have a number of different themes:

20th November - Music
27th November - Sport
4th December - Academic
11th December - The Arts

Make sure that you come along to explore these themes and find out more about the Committee.
