A message from the Chair:
Welcome to Film Unit!
"Welcome back to Film Unit! I can’t contain my pride in our team for bringing out another stellar schedule for you all to enjoy. I am beyond excited to see my personal favourite Forrest Gump amongst the many other classics on the big screen, alongside our usual line-up of future favourites like La La Land, I, Daniel Blake, Fantastic Beats. As if this wasn't enough, we will be hosting an Autistic Friendly screening, Hard of Hearing friendly matinees and another free Cinema Takeover Screening. What's more, we our hosting our own British Comedy Film Festival! Thank you to all who contributed to our existence, those who will move it forward and importantly, those who attend our screenings <3<3<3"
Chairperson of Film Unit, 2016-17
What is Film Unit and what do you do?
Film Unit is a professional quality, independent cinema located deep within the University of Sheffield Students' Union - we've been entertaining the people of Sheffield for over 65 years.
Film Unit was founded in 1949 and joined the British Federation of Film Societies (BFFS) a year later - making it the longest serving student film society in the UK. In that time it has won multiple awards, including the BFFS award for the Best Student Society (no less than FOUR times!).
Fast forward to 2016 and Film Unit is still going strong. We've got some great films to show this year, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Deadpool and Zootropolis. If the blockbusters aren't your cup of tea, we're also showing a fair share of foreign language films, such as Son Of Saul, A Brand New Testament and Victoria. We're even digging deep into the achieves to bring you some old classics - we're screening not one, but two Kubrick masterpieces, as well as Akira Kurosawa's 1954 film, Seven Samurai, shown in glorious 35mm.
No matter who you are or what you like, there is something for everybody at Film Unit!
Buy a ticket! They're available for £3 from the Union Box Office. £1.50 for under 12s (for age appropriate film). Tickets go on sale a week in advance, and although you can buy tickets on the night, we advise you to buy them a little earlier to avoid having to queue or being late. Alternatively, if you get involved you can see films for free!
Who can come and see films?
Anyone! Just buy a ticket at the Box Office in the Students' Union or online at https://tickets.sheffieldstudentsunion.com/
I have young children. Can they come too?
As long as the film is suitable, yes - in fact, they even get a half-price ticket! Look at the BBFC rating of the film for guidance. You should also be aware that films may be preceeded by adverts or trailers of a higher certificate than of the feature presentation. Look in one of our programmes for showings that are Child Friendly (CF) - these won’t have adverts and will only have trailers suitable to the certificate. Alternatively, you can just ask the House Manager on the night to tell you when it'll be safe to come in. Please note that anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Proof of age may be required when attending films with a 15 or 18 certificate.
