Sheffield Students’ Union: UCU Industrial Action Position
The University and College Union (UCU) will be on strike over pay and conditions at 60 institutions, including our University, between the 25th November and 4th December.
We're disappointed that a resolution couldn't be made before strike action was required, and as a Students' Union, we are in a complicated position.
The Students' Union will continue to represent student interests in negotiations between UCU and the University, and keep students regularly and properly informed during the industrial action. This work will be led by SU President Jake Verity.
Yesterday evening SU Council agreed to the aims of the Students' Union during the planned industrial action:
1. To actively support the strike. We stand in solidarity with UCU members in the belief that their working conditions are our students' learning conditions. This work will be led by our Education Officer Charlie Porter.
2. To lead an active campaign prioritising the wellbeing and welfare of students in the SU and university during the industrial action. This work will be led by our Welfare Officer Beren Maddison.
We have committed to ensuring the SU building remains a welcoming place for students to gather and study with friends, in a calm space where everybody feels valued. SU outlets and services will be running the business as usual. In addition, Levels 2 and 3 will be dedicated to student support and welfare, and level 4 will host strike support activity.
We'll keep students informed and up to date as these strands of activity develop ahead of 25th November.
