You can pay your bills in full when you receive them (usually every three months) but this can make it difficult to manage in the winter months when costs can be much higher.
You can agree a monthly direct debit plan. This means you pay a fixed amount towards your bill every month so you avoid having to pay higher bills in the winter. In addition, many suppliers offer a discount if you pay by direct debit. It is also generally cheaper if you manage your accounts online and opt out of receiving paper bills.
The most expensive way to pay your bills is by pre-payment card/token meters. This type of meter is quite rare in the student housing sector. They are usually only fitted in properties where there is an outstanding debt to the supplier.
Utility bills are often based on estimated meter readings. If the estimated reading is too low you could end up paying less than you owe. If you receive a succession of bills based on estimated readings, by the time you come to leave the property and finalise your account you will probably have a large bill to pay. You can avoid this happening by checking your meter when you receive a bill based on an estimated reading and contacting the supplier to request a revised bill based on the actual reading.
